The best time to surf in Maui depends on your skill level and which side of the island you plan to surf.
For experienced surfers, the best time to surf Maui is during the winter months, from November through March. This is when the north shore receives the biggest and most powerful swells. Popular winter surf spots include Honolua Bay, Ho‘okipa Beach, Pe‘ahi “Jaws,” and Baldwin Beach. These waves can be heavy, fast, and dangerous, so winter surf is best for advanced surfers only.

For beginners, the best time to surf in Maui is usually spring, summer, and early fall, from April through October. During these months, the south and west shores often have smaller, cleaner, and more manageable waves. Areas near Lahaina, Kihei, Kalama Beach Park, and Cove Park are popular beginner-friendly surf zones.
The best time of day to surf in Maui is usually early morning. Winds are typically lighter, the ocean is cleaner, and conditions are more consistent before the afternoon trade winds pick up. Many surfers aim to paddle out between sunrise and 10 a.m.
